Hard Hats for Little Heads Program a Success

Clinic Providers Distribute Over 200 Helmets to Patients

March 11, 2008
With financial support from the Travis County Medical Alliance (TCMA) and Texas Medical Association (TMA), People's Community Clinic (PCC) has distributed 200 bicycle helmets to children during their well child visits.  The program, titled, "Hard Hats for Little Heads" involves pediatric providers teaching parents and children about the importance of wearing a helmet.  They also take time to make sure the helmet fits the child's head properly.

Wearing a helmet that fits properly can prevent up to 85 percent of all head injuries.  Statistics show less than half of 5 to 14 year olds wear helmets when riding a bike and only one third of these children wear their helmets correctly.
