2006 Annual Benefit Luncheon

The 10th Annual “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” Luncheon

Monday, May 8, 2006

Thanks to many a generous Austinite, the 10th annual People’s Community Clinic Luncheon was a resounding success, raising $200,000 to benefit the Clinic’s many activities in service to the Austin community. Held at the Renaissance Austin Hotel, the benefit serves each year to raise awareness of the Clinic’s mission and honor outstanding members of Austin’s community, as well as providing a significant portion of the Clinic’s crucial fundraising support base.

The Luncheon’s program this year benefited from the services of three generous Austin notables. Former Mayor Kirk Watson graciously agreed to be the Master of Ceremonies for this year’s event. In addition, luncheon attendees heard from Shannon Sedwick, a comedian and the founder of Esther’s Follies. Shannon is former PCC patient who shared her story of getting to know the Clinic. Finally, our keynote speaker was Gary Chapman, director of the 21st Century Project at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, who spoke on the importance of local efforts in addressing what seem to be insurmountable challenges. For more than 36 years, People’s Community Clinic has been working in conjunction with individuals and partners in our community to provide quality healthcare to the under- and uninsured in Central Texas. Fundraising efforts such as the annual Luncheon are a critical part of the success of People’s Community Clinic. Up to 60 percent of the clinic’s funding each year comes from private support. People’s Community Clinic remains indebted to the individuals and foundations that continue to give generously to support its mission in the community.

The W. Neal Kocurek Award

People’s Community Clinic honors the memory of one of its strongest advocates and partners, the late W. Neal Kocurek, Ph.D., by choosing each year to honor an exceptional member of the Austin community with the W. Neal Kocurek Award for Health Care Advocacy. In 2006, the Clinic presented the W. Neal Kocurek Award to Paul and Shiela Carrozza in recognition of their ongoing advocacy in the area of health and wellness for all Central Texans.

“One of the biggest stresses of a parent is the sickness of a child,” said Paul Carrozza, CEO, RunTex, Inc. “People’s Community Clinic brings access to quality care, for those who would otherwise not have it for their children or for themselves. Shiela and I are pleased to support the clinic through our RunTex Foundation. We’re big fans of the clinic and deeply honored to receive the 2006 W. Neal Kocurek award.”

People’s Community Clinic (PCC) offers comprehensive, community-wide health care services that include family planning; prenatal care; pediatrics; adolescent medicine and adult medical care; as well as health education, prevention and social services. Founded in 1970, PCC is among the oldest and most successful independent clinics in the country providing high quality health care to thousands of uninsured and medically underserved children and adults each year.
